From Sketch to Metal: A Custom Boy Scout Neckerchief Slide

An Unexpected Rediscovery

Every now and then, Facebook Memories resurfaces something I'd completely forgotten about.

This time, it was a short video from 2019 featuring a custom Boy Scout neckerchief slide I created for a client whose son was active in Scouting. Watching it again reminded me how much I enjoy looking back at the creative process—not because the work is perfect, but because it captures a moment in time.

A Symbol of Life

The finished piece was handcrafted from copper with a hand-cut sterling silver Chai (חי) symbol at its center. Meaning "life" in Hebrew, the Chai symbol added a deeply personal element to an accessory that would accompany its wearer on countless adventures.

Every custom commission carries its own story, and this one blended craftsmanship with symbolism in a way that made the finished piece especially meaningful.

Where Every Piece Begins

What made rediscovering this video especially rewarding was seeing the original sketch alongside the finished piece. Before the saw ever touches metal, before the torch is lit, and before the final polish brings everything to life, there's simply an idea taking shape on paper.

For me, the sketch is more than a plan—it's the first step in translating someone's story into something they can hold, wear, and remember.

Giving an Old Story a New Home

I decided to give this little piece of my creative history a permanent home on YouTube. So much of an artist's journey lives in old photos, forgotten videos, and projects that quietly disappear into personal collections.

Every once in a while, it's worth bringing one back into the light.

Watch the Process

I've embedded the original video below so you can see the finished neckerchief slide alongside the sketch that inspired it.

Sometimes the journey from pencil to polished metal is just as meaningful as the finished piece itself.

From the studio, through the stories.

This space is an open journal of sorts—where stories, symbols, and small moments gather. Some entries trace the creative process, others reflect on inspiration found in nature, history, or daily life. All are woven with the same intent: to offer a glimpse behind the relics and the meanings they carry.
