When the Witches Return to the Water
October water, pointed hats, and a little seasonal magic.
There are certain things that mark the changing of a season.
The first cool morning. The light shifting a little earlier in the evening. Leaves beginning to collect along the trail.
And, for me, witches on paddleboards.
A Different Kind of October Ritual
I’ve spent a lot of time on the water over the years, especially here on Long Island. The SUP witch paddles are playful, a little ridiculous in the best possible way, and always one of the highlights of my October.
Some years the weather cooperates. Some years the wind has other ideas. Either way, I look forward to it. I’ve joined witch paddles here on Long Island, and the tradition has even carried me to Sleepy Hollow — which admittedly, feels like an especially appropriate place to take a witch hat and paddleboard in October.
From the Water to the Work
Inspiration rarely stays neatly in one category for me. A moment on the water can become a story, an image, or an idea I tuck away for later.
Life → observation → inspiration → creation
I wanted to capture some of what I love about these October paddles — the water, the changing light, the witchy silhouette and that feeling of being somewhere between ordinary life and imagination for a little while.
And that feels reason enough to make it.
A Little Something for the Salty Witches
So, in the spirit of October water and witches who would rather have a paddle in their hands than a broom, I turned the artwork into a phone wallpaper. It’s formatted vertically in 9:16, ready to use as a phone background, and yours to keep for personal use.

Maybe you’re another SUP Witch. Maybe October is simply your season. Or maybe you just like the idea of a witch flying across a glowing moon on a paddle. Either way, consider this a little piece of October from my world to yours.
