Paddleboard Filming Fail (and What I Learned)
Setting Out with a Plan
This past weekend, I set out with a simple goal: record myself paddleboarding so I could evaluate my technique.
A quick look at my latest paddleboarding filming experiment… and the lesson I learned about camera placement. Shot with the Insta360 Go3 on Long Island.
I mounted my Insta360 Go3s to the rear of my board using a ball mount, imagining I’d get a nice, wide view of my stance and paddle stroke.
Where It Went Sideways
Well… lesson learned in camera positioning.
I didn’t check the field of view beforehand, assuming that since I was recording in freeform video, I could simply adjust the framing in post. Apparently not. Or maybe it’s just me, because Insta360 Studio refuses to install on my laptop (something about an ARM processor—technology, am I right?). 🙄🤷♀️
The last frame of the video even shows my camera setup from an Instagram Story snippet. Clearly, I need to experiment more with the ball mount and positioning—or maybe find a way to mount the camera closer to the board.
Help Me Figure This Out
If you’re a fellow paddler or action cam enthusiast, I’d love to hear your tips. How do you mount your camera for the best paddleboarding shots? What settings do you use to capture both stance and technique?
Drop me your ideas—I’m all ears (and paddles).
